The main A149 coast road runs through the centre of the village, causing congestion in the summer months due to the tight, narrow streets. It lies within the Norfolk Coast AONB and the North Norfolk Heritage Coast.

These days Cley next the Sea is nearly a mile from open water, but back in the middle ages this lovely Norfolk village was an important trading port.Cley does have a beach, which is mainly shingle and is accessed by walking over the marshes. During the Middle Ages it was "one of the principal ports of East Anglia, exporting large quantities of wool and grain.
